BUCKET-LIST JOURNEYS

Bucket list trips, planned properly

The Great Migration, Japan’s temples, and Antarctica’s ice. Bucket list trips are the ones you wait years for, so we get the details right: the season, the camp or ship, and the permits that sell out first.

Once in a lifetime

The trip you’ve been waiting for

You may only do it once, so the details matter more than ever.

Bucket-list trips often involve places that are hard to reach, and the best camps, ships and permits are limited. A few weeks can be the difference between seeing the river crossings or not, calm seas or rough ones, cherry blossom or bare branches.

We help you choose the right season and the right place to stay, a small camp with a great guide or the right cabin on an expedition ship, and join every flight, transfer and quiet day into one journey, with someone to call if anything changes.

Plan ahead

What sells out first

For most bucket-list trips, we suggest starting 9 to 18 months ahead. These are the pieces that go earliest.

  • Safari camps in migration seasonThe best-placed small camps in Kenya and Tanzania have only a handful of tents.
  • Gorilla permits in RwandaNumbers are limited each day, and trekkers must be 15 or older.
  • The Inca TrailTrail permits are limited and often sell out months ahead, and the trail closes every February.
  • Antarctica cruisesThe season is short, ships are small, and the best cabins go first.
  • Japan in spring and autumnKyoto hotels and the best ryokan fill up early for blossom and autumn colour.

Questions

Bucket-list trips, answered

How far ahead should I plan a bucket-list trip?

Ideally 9 to 18 months. Permits, small camps, expedition ships and peak-season hotels are limited, and the earlier you start, the more choice you have. Dates coming up sooner? Let’s see what’s available.

What does a bucket-list trip cost?

It depends on the destination, season, length and style of travel. Our sample journeys show “from” prices on real trips we’ve designed, and we’ll shape the plan around your budget.

Is there a planning fee?

Custom trips carry a planning fee, and we explain it and what it covers before we begin.

Can you combine several countries in one trip?

Yes. Many bucket-list journeys do, such as a safari with Cape Town or Zanzibar, or Machu Picchu with the Galápagos. We plan the route and flights so the connections work.

Are these trips suitable for older travellers or children?

Often, yes, with the right choices. Some experiences have age limits or need a good level of fitness, such as gorilla trekking or the Inca Trail. We’ll tell you what each one involves and suggest alternatives where needed.

Do I need travel insurance?

We recommend considering it early, since some benefits may need to be bought soon after your first deposit. The insurer sets the coverage and eligibility.

Will you help if something changes before or during my trip?

Yes, for arrangements booked through us. Before you leave, your final itinerary will include the contact details to use if something urgent affects your trip outside regular office hours.
