10 Mistakes To Avoid When Booking An All-Inclusive Vacation

Chances are if you landed on this page, you’ve done your research, and you’re ready to plan your next vacation at an all-inclusive resort! This guide is here to help lead you in the right direction so you can avoid these ten things that could make or break your next getaway.

1. Not calculating extra fees.

So you’re doing some research and seeing all these excellent, flashy, affordable prices. Fantastic news, right? Well, what if I told you an all-inclusive isn’t exactly going to include everything. Not factoring in things such as transportation from the airport to the resort, excursions, resort fees, tips, and certain restaurants can add up quickly. Be sure to make a list of any extras you want to include that will make your vacation more desirable.

2. Take advantage of things that are included.

Although the first tip warned you about the extra fees and things that might not come with the price tag, be sure to take advantage of what is included.  From the second you get up, activities are going on all over the place. As mentioned previously, get a list of what your all-inclusive does include so you can make a checklist of things you want to take advantage of.

3. Forgetting to pack all your necessities.

Think of what all you’re going to need ahead of time! Not packing things like sunscreen, shampoo/conditioner, any medications you may need will run you a pretty penny. This stuff is way too overpriced at the resorts! You can always purchase travel-sized bottles to carry stuff in, too, so you aren’t taking up too much space in your suitcase.

4. Don’t forget some extra cash!

Depending on the resort, tips may or may not be included.  You also want to have cash for any souvenirs/gifts you’ll want to bring back home. Even if you plan to pay any extras with a credit card, you never know what could happen. Also, some smaller merchants only accept cash.

*Bonus tip* exchange currency at a local bank the week before traveling. Airports charge the highest fees! Click here to see different ways you can exchange your currency before traveling.

5. Don’t drink the tap water.

Although many resorts now have a water filtration system in place, it’s not worth the risk. Please take advantage of the bottled water they offer. Most times, this will be included, and take my word of advice, STAY HYDRATED! I can not stress this enough. Time flies when you’re having a good time, and the last thing you want is to get sick from drinking the tap water or passing out because you didn’t get enough H2O.

6. Check the dress code.

You don’t want to show up unprepared! Resort attire will vary depending on where you go. Keep in mind the more upscale resorts could have a strict dress code in place. Also, one of the experiences all-inclusive vacations can offer is themed dinners. Have fun with this! I’ve seen events such as a luau dinner party, black-tie affairs, masquerades, etc.

7. Book an excursion before you go!

Some people might be all for lounging beach/poolside the whole vaca, and that’s okay! But, it won’t hurt to check out what excursions are available to you and if you find something, book before you go! This will save you time and money. Check out what tours and activities you can book here.

8. Check your surroundings.

If you plan on venturing outside of the resort you’ll be staying at, do some research ahead of time. It’s nice to explore the area you’re visiting. Just be sure to do it safely. Guide Me Away can also help arrange transportation to and from the places you want to see.

9. Check out restaurant options outside of the buffet.

If you love the experience of trying out new restaurants/food, take advantage of looking up some places nearby or in the resort that has a great featured menu! Some may charge extra for certain plates, but factor that in when you’re calculating your extra fees. And don’t forget about room service!
